Use X-guard when you can elevate with both hooks under a standing passer; use single-leg X when you isolate one leg for sweeps, stand-ups, and ankle-lock entries.
- Choose X-guard when both legs can elevate and off-balance the passer
- Choose single-leg X when one leg is isolated and you need a quick sweep or stand-up
- If they smash your elevation, recover butterfly or seated guard instead of forcing hooks
