Ankle Pick
Standing takedown that snatches an ankle while breaking posture with upper-body control — a high-percentage entry to top position in gi and no-gi.
From StandingTo Top / Side Control
Overview
The ankle pick finishes a standing exchange by controlling the upper body (collar, head, or underhook) and snatching the far or near ankle as you drive them offline. It is a staple wrestling-for-BJJ takedown because it requires less deep penetration than a full double-leg.
#Break Posture Standing
Win a grip that loads their weight forward.
- Establish collar, head, or underhook control
- Pull their posture into you
- Identify the planted ankle you will attack
- Angle your feet for a drive past their base
#Snatch the Ankle and Drive
- Change levels and secure the ankle or pant cuff
- Pull the upper body while blocking or lifting the foot
- Drive through the offline angle
- Prevent them from hopping the foot free
#Settle Top Position
Do not admire the takedown.
- Follow to side control, knee-on-belly, or a clean pass
- Address immediate guard recovery frames
- Connect cross-face/underhook as soon as possible
- Only then hunt submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
- Collar, head, or underhook control to break posture
- Ankle or pant cuff snatch on the target foot
- Drive angle that removes their base rather than colliding chest-to-chest
- Follow-through hands ready to settle top control
Timing & Movement Cues
- Pick when their weight shifts onto the target foot
- Attack as they step in or circle into your collar/head control
- Finish when posture is already broken — late picks hit a strong base
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Pull the upper body into you while the ankle hand lifts or blocks the foot
- Step past their line so they fall into the space you create
- Ride to top half or side control immediately after the mat return
Typical Counters to Expect
- Hopping the targeted foot back and sprawling
- Whizzer or front headlock when your head drops too far
- Guard pulls that catch you mid-level change
Follow-Up Options
- Side control or knee-on-belly after a clean mat return
- Front headlock if they turn to turtle
- Pass chains if they recover open guard on the way down
Setups & Entries
- Collar-and-sleeve pressure in the gi to force a heavy lead foot
- Snap-down threats that make them step a foot forward
- Single-leg feints that draw a planted ankle into range
Training Drills
- Collar control to ankle-pick entries on a cooperative partner
- Timing drills on circling footwork
- Takedown-to-pass rounds ending in side control
Coaching Notes
- Upper-body break creates the pick — do not dive on a strong posture
- Change levels just enough; over-diving invites front headlocks
- The finish is the mat return plus top settle, not the ankle touch alone

Summary
Ankle picks are posture break plus foot snatch. Load their upper body, attack the planted ankle on an angle, and settle top position before they recover guard.
