Leg Drag

Guard pass that drags one leg across the body to flatten the hips and settle into a dominant pinning position.

From Open Guard / De La RivaTo Side Control / Mount
Overview

The leg drag clears guard by pulling one of the opponent’s legs across your hip line so their hips face away and their frames collapse. From the drag you can pin the near hip, kill the re-guard, and move to side control, mount, or back exposure.

#Capture and Drag the Leg

Get the leg across your hip line before settling weight.

  • Control the target ankle or pants and break their hook connection
  • Pull the leg across your body while stepping past their hip
  • Drop your near hip into the dragged thigh to trap it
  • Keep opposite-side upper-body control so they cannot turn in
#Pin and Kill Re-guard
  • Chest pressure toward the far shoulder
  • Block the free knee with your near shin or hand
  • Walk base toward their head while the dragged leg stays trapped
  • Prevent shrimp space by staying heavy on the hip line
#Clear to Dominant Top

Choose side control, mount, or back based on their turn.

  • Release into side control once the free leg is neutralized
  • Step over to mount if their elbows stay high and soft
  • Follow to the back if they turn away from the pin
  • Stabilize before hunting submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
  • Pants or ankle control on the dragged leg
  • Opposite sleeve, collar, or shoulder control to stop them turning in
  • Hip and chest pressure pinning the dragged thigh across your body
  • Near-side knee wedged to block the free leg from returning
Timing & Movement Cues
  • Drag when their De La Riva or open-guard hook extends past your hip
  • Exploit moments where both hands fight high and the legs are light
  • Settle the pin as soon as their hips square away from you
Pressure & Weight Distribution
  • Keep the dragged leg glued across your near hip — space invites re-guard
  • Chest pressure toward their far shoulder kills the turn-in
  • Walk your base toward their head once the hips are flattened
Typical Counters to Expect
  • Opponent hangs on reverse De La Riva and reinserts the free hook
  • Granby or inversion to recover open guard
  • Underhook pummel that turns the drag into a scramble
Follow-Up Options
  • Side control with the dragged leg still trapped under your hip
  • Mount when their far elbow stays off the mat
  • Back take if they turn away from the pin
Setups & Entries
  • Clear De La Riva by stuffing the hook and dragging the same-side leg
  • Toreando to force a light lead leg, then snap it into the drag
  • Force a reaction with knee-cut pressure, then switch to the drag on the exposed leg
Training Drills
  • Leg-drag entries from open guard with cooperative hooks
  • Pin maintenance rounds where the bottom player only tries to turn in
  • Drag-to-side-control consolidation without releasing the trapped leg early
Coaching Notes
  • The drag is a pin first and a pass second
  • Control the upper body enough that they cannot square hips back to you
  • Do not chase submissions until the free knee is blocked

Summary

Leg drag passing is about flattening hips, not racing around legs. Drag one leg across, pin it, kill the turn-in, then clear to side control or mount while the re-guard stays shut.
