Pendulum Sweep
Swinging leg momentum sweep from closed guard — creates armbar and triangle follow-ups when the sweep fails.

Overview
The pendulum sweep uses a swinging leg combined with sleeve control to rotate the opponent over. Even when the sweep fails, the momentum often exposes armbars and triangles — making it a favorite chain attack from closed guard.
#Load and Swing
- Control sleeve and break posture from closed guard
- Open guard and swing the far leg in a wide arc
- Pull sleeve across body as the leg pendulums
#Sweep or Submit
- Follow to mount if the opponent falls
- Capture armbar if they post the arm
- Switch to triangle if the arm crosses the neck
Key Grips & Control Points
- Deep sleeve grip on the arm you will attack
- Opposite collar or head control for posture break
- Closed guard connection until the swing begins
Timing & Movement Cues
- Swing the leg when the opponent bases on the opposite side
- Pull sleeve across your centerline during the pendulum motion
- Follow the roll immediately — delayed follow-ups lose the armbar
Follow-Up Options
- Armbar when the opponent bases with a straight arm
- Triangle when they hide the arm across the neck
- Mount when the sweep completes fully
Setups & Entries
- Break posture from closed guard before opening for the swing
- Combine with flower sweep concepts on the same side
- Threaten scissor sweep to force a base change
Training Drills
- Pendulum leg swing repetitions without partner
- Sweep-or-armbar chain rounds from closed guard
- Reaction drill: partner chooses base side each rep
Coaching Notes
- Swing leg comes from deep — shallow kicks lack momentum
- Pull sleeve to opposite hip, not straight up
- Keep head off the mat during the follow-up armbar

Summary
The pendulum sweep is a momentum play. Swing big, pull the sleeve, and be ready to mount or armbar — the sweep is only half the attack.
