Scissor Sweep

Classic closed-guard sweep that uses opposing forces to topple a kneeling opponent and secure top position.

From Closed GuardTo Mount
Overview

The scissor sweep is one of the foundational closed-guard movements. By controlling the opponent’s posture and creating opposing pushing and pulling forces with your legs, you off-balance to one side and follow through to mount or a dominant top position.

#Setup the Angle

Break posture and insert the shin shield before committing.

  • Open guard momentarily and place your right foot on the left hip
  • Drag opponent forward with cross-collar grip to force weight shift
  • Slide your left shin across their torso with toes active
  • Pinch your knees to control distance and prevent posture recovery
#Execute the Scissor Motion
  • Pull sleeve across your centerline while retracting the posting arm
  • Kick your top leg across their shoulder line in a diagonal path
  • Sweep your bottom leg toward the mat like a scissor motion
  • Use momentum to roll them over their trapped arm and hip
#Secure the Top Position

Arrive with chest heavy and knees wide to stabilize mount.

  • Follow the rotation and come up on your elbow then hand
  • Slide your knee across their belly and land in mount
  • Immediately widen knees and drop hips to settle the position
  • Establish underhooks or high mount to begin attacks
Key Grips & Control Points
  • Same-side sleeve grip to prevent basing
  • Cross-collar or head control to break posture
  • Shin across opponent’s torso acting as a blocking wedge
  • Foot on the hip to pivot and create angle
Timing & Movement Cues
  • Initiate when opponent’s hips drift over their knees
  • Exploit moments after they post a foot to stand
  • Pull when the opponent exhales or loosens posture
Pressure & Weight Distribution
  • Keep shin shield tight to ribs to prevent pressure forward
  • Drive bottom leg into the mat to generate lateral torque
  • Pull sleeve to opposite pocket while kicking over the shoulder
Typical Counters to Expect
  • Opponent posts same-side hand or knee to block the sweep
  • Standing up quickly to disengage the closed guard
  • Weaving arm inside shin to flatten the shield
Follow-Up Options
  • Transition to armbar if opponent posts the arm
  • Switch to hip-bump sweep if they retreat weight backward
  • Underhook the far leg for a pendulum sweep when they base wide
Setups & Entries
  • Break posture with collar drag before inserting shin shield
  • Threaten a cross-collar choke to force defensive arm positioning
  • Use knee-pinch from closed guard to lock their arm to torso
Training Drills
  • Knee-shield scissor swing repetitions focusing on hip pivot
  • Two-partner reaction drill alternating scissor and hip-bump sweeps
  • Flow drill: closed guard to scissor sweep to mount stabilization
Coaching Notes
  • Angle hips off centerline before attempting to sweep
  • Maintain sleeve tension throughout the motion
  • Follow the opponent immediately to avoid giving space for scramble

Summary

The scissor sweep thrives on angle creation and timing. Control posture, insert a strong shin shield, and apply opposing forces to topple the opponent into mount while staying glued for dominant control.
