Seoi Nage
Shoulder throw that loads the opponent over your back and rotates them to the mat — a high-percentage gi attack from collar-and-sleeve.
From StandingTo Top / Mount or Side Control
Overview
Seoi nage turns in under their arm, loads their weight onto your back/shoulder, and throws them forward over you. Gi BJJ commonly uses collar-and-sleeve or lapel variations; no-gi adaptations rely on wrist and overhook control. The throw pairs well with duck-unders and arm drags when they defend by posting tall.
#Break and Enter
Create a forward load, then turn in.
- Establish collar-sleeve or wrist control
- Pull them onto their toes
- Step and turn your back under their arm
- Keep elbows tight to your ribs
#Load and Throw
- Fit their chest over your shoulders/back
- Bend knees and lift through the hips
- Rotate them over as hands pull through
- Commit past the halfway point
#Settle Top
Pins score and stop the scramble.
- Follow to mount or side control
- Clear posts and turtle turns
- Establish chest pressure and underhook
- Only then attack submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
- Collar and sleeve or lapel control (gi)
- Wrist / overhook entries in no-gi
- Tight back contact as you turn in under their arm
- Hands pulling them onto your shoulders through the throw
Timing & Movement Cues
- Enter when they step forward or resist a pull
- Turn in as their weight rises onto their toes
- Throw when their chest is already loaded over your back
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Drop your level under their center — do not bend and yank from in front
- Keep elbows tight so they cannot whizzer the entry
- Follow to a pin; unfinished seoi often becomes their guard pull
Typical Counters to Expect
- Whizzer / overhook that stalls the turn-in
- Sprawling hips back and circling
- Duck-under or back take if you leave your head exposed
Follow-Up Options
- Mount or side control after a clean fall
- Kesa / scarf-hold style pins in the scramble
- Armbar chains if they post a hand on the way down
Setups & Entries
- Collar-sleeve pulls that bend them forward
- Osoto / uchi mata feints that make them overpost
- Arm-drag entries that expose the near shoulder
Training Drills
- Turn-in uchi-komi without hard throws
- Gi collar-sleeve seoi to controlled pin
- No-gi wrist-and-overhook adaptations
Coaching Notes
- Load the back before you rotate
- Elbows tight; big elbows get whizzed
- In BJJ, land safe and settle top control immediately

Summary
Seoi nage turns under the arm, loads them on your back, and throws forward into a pin. Keep elbows tight, finish through the rotation, and treat the landing as the start of top control.
