Technical Stand-Up
Foundational movement that posts a hand, bases a foot, and stands safely from the ground while keeping distance and frames.
From Seated / SupineTo Standing
Overview
The technical stand-up is a core escape and base-recovery skill: from seated or supine positions you post a hand, plant a base foot, elevate the hips, and stand while keeping a frame toward the opponent. It appears in self-defense, open-guard retention, X-guard finishes, and any scramble where standing is safer than staying on your back.
#Create Space
Do not stand into their chest.
- Frame on hips or biceps from seated/supine
- Hip escape or scoot to make posting room
- Keep eyes on the opponent
- Choose the side you will post and stand
#Post and Rise
- Post the hand opposite your base foot
- Plant the base foot near the hip
- Elevate hips and swing the free leg through
- Keep the free hand framing toward the threat
#Settle Stance
Finish standing ready to fight.
- Land on both feet in a balanced stance
- Hands up, chin down, hips under you
- Circle if they shoot immediately
- Re-engage or disengage based on the exchange
Key Grips & Control Points
- Posting hand on the mat opposite the base foot
- Base foot planted near the hip ready to stand
- Free hand framing toward the opponent’s hips or hands
- Eyes and chest oriented to the threat while rising
Timing & Movement Cues
- Stand when distance appears after a failed pass or disengage
- Rise as they retreat or reset grips
- Use it to finish sweeps that elevate their base (X-guard, single-leg X)
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Hips up first, then bring the free leg through
- Keep the frame hand honest — standing blind invites shots
- Land on a balanced fighting stance, not a bent-over scramble
Typical Counters to Expect
- Opponent closing distance and tackling as you post
- Grip breaks that yank the posting hand
- Knee taps or ankle picks on a lazy base foot
Follow-Up Options
- Re-engage open guard if standing is not available
- Shoot or snap if they overcommit as you rise
- Circle to angles instead of standing square in the pocket
Setups & Entries
- Hip escape to create posting space
- X-guard or SLX elevation that puts them on one leg
- Guard retention frames that force them to back out
Training Drills
- Solo technical stand-ups to a fighting stance
- Partner pressure rounds: stand only when frames create space
- X-guard sweep finishes that end in a technical stand-up
Coaching Notes
- Post and base on opposite sides
- Never turn your back while rising
- Stand to a stance you can defend — posture matters
