Half Guard
Hybrid guard blending defensive recovery with powerful transitions.
Overview
Half guard sits between closed guard and advanced open guards. Controlling one of the opponent's legs allows the bottom player to slow passes, off-balance opponents, and build sweeps or submissions while staying relatively safe.
Position Flow
How to Enter
- Recover from side control by threading the top leg inside
- Pull opponent into half guard from failed closed/open guard attempts
- Deploy knee shield as the pass is halfway through
- Sit up from butterfly guard to capture a single leg
How to Exit
- Old school sweep to come up on a single leg
- Electric chair or deep half guard entries for dynamic movement
- Back takes when the underhook drives the opponent forward
- Shrimp back to full guard if pressure becomes overwhelming
Key Controls
- Clamp the trapped leg with knees and an active bottom hook
- Win the inside battle with underhooks or cross-face pressure
- Build a knee-shield frame to maintain space when needed
- Clamp the far arm with a whizzer if the underhook is lost
Vulnerabilities
- Heavy cross-face pressure flattening the bottom player
- Knee-cut passes slipping through loose knee shields
- Backstep passes when hips turn too far underneath
- Darce/Ezekiel chokes if the head dives too deep
Ideal When
You need a hybrid guard that slows aggressive passing while providing options to sweep, submit, or recover full guard.
OffenseOffense
Goals
- Secure the underhook to build dominant angles
- Chain transitions that force the passer to constantly rebalance
Key Techniques
- Knee tap and single-leg sweeps from the underhook
- Back takes when the opponent posts across your body
- Deep half guard entries leading to waiter sweeps
- Kimura and guillotine attacks off overhook reactions
Pro Tips
- Stay on your side and drive diagonally through the opponent’s base
- Climb from knee shield to underhook quickly before pressure settles
Common Mistakes
- Letting the passer pummel a cross-face before building frames
- Hanging on to lockdown hooks without transitioning to attacks
DefenseDefense
Goals
- Flatten the bottom player and clear the knee line
- Win upper-body grips to deny underhooks and knee shields
Key Techniques
- Knee-cut pass with heavy cross-face pressure
- Backstep pass to expose the bottom player’s hips
Pro Tips
- Keep hips low and chest-to-chest before freeing the leg
- Switch between cross-face and underhook control to prevent reguard
Common Mistakes
- Allowing inside frames to remain while trying to free the leg
- Standing tall and giving the bottom player easy single legs

Summary
Half guard is the problem-solving guard—win inside space, chain transitions, and nullify pressure so you can elevate, attack, or recover before the passer settles chest-to-chest control.
