Sweeps Techniques
Master the art of sweeping your opponent from guard positions
Sweeps reverse the exchange from bottom to top. They work by breaking balance, controlling a posting limb or hip line, and following through into a stable top position.
Good sweeps are built from timing and connection. If the opponent is balanced, you usually need to create motion first. Pull, push, angle, elevate, or threaten a submission so their base becomes predictable.
Effective sweeping habits:
- Off-balance before committing.
- Control the post that would stop the sweep.
- Keep your hips engaged through the finish.
- Come up immediately and stabilize top control.
Treat every sweep as a transition. The point is not just to flip the opponent, but to arrive in a position you can control.
