Electric Chair
Lockdown-based exposure that splits the opponent’s legs and forces a sweep or banana-split style tap depending on rules and training agreements.
From Lockdown Half GuardTo Top / Side Control
Overview
The electric chair extends from lockdown half guard by controlling the free leg and stretching the opponent’s base. In many gyms it is trained primarily as a sweep/reversal entry; compression finishes (banana split) depend on ruleset and partner agreements.
#Secure Lockdown
Do not chase the free leg with a soft figure-four.
- Figure-four the trapped leg
- Angle hips to keep the knee pinned
- Build an upper-body frame or underhook
- Identify the free leg you will control
#Control and Stretch
- Capture the free ankle or knee line
- Extend carefully to break their base
- Watch for the post that creates the sweep
- Keep the lockdown alive through the extension
#Sweep to Top
Cash out the reaction.
- Roll or come up as their base splits
- Settle side control or a strong single-leg
- Clear immediate frames
- Only then consider secondary attacks
Key Grips & Control Points
- Lockdown figure-four on the trapped leg
- Control of the free ankle or knee line
- Upper-body connection that stops them posting out of the stretch
- Hip angle that loads them over the trapped side
Timing & Movement Cues
- Extend when lockdown is solid and their free leg is reachable
- Sweep as they post to kill the stretch
- Follow to top before they extract the lockdown leg
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Keep the lockdown pinched while you work the free leg
- Stretch with control — do not yank explosively into the split
- Use the reaction to come up on top rather than stalling in the stretch
Typical Counters to Expect
- Extracting the lockdown knee before the free leg is controlled
- Heavy posture and cross-face that flatten you
- Standing and clearing before the stretch starts
Follow-Up Options
- Come up to side control or a single-leg finish
- Return to Z-guard if the stretch fails but space appears
- Deep half if they lift hips to escape
Setups & Entries
- Lockdown under smash pressure, then catch the free ankle
- Fake a dogfight stand-up to make the free leg light
- Z-guard to lockdown when you need the figure-four first
Training Drills
- Lockdown to electric-chair entries with cooperative stretch
- Sweep-finish rounds that require coming up on top
- Safety-focused positional sparring with clear tap culture
Coaching Notes
- Treat the stretch as a sweep engine first in most training rooms
- Know whether banana-split finishes are legal/agreed before hunting them
- Control beats cranking

Summary
Electric chair turns lockdown into a base-breaking stretch. Control the free leg, extend with discipline, and finish the sweep to top — with clear rules/agreements before treating it as a compression submission.
