Lateral Drop

Sideways throw that turns and drops the opponent over your hip/leg line — a powerful clinch finish when they overcommit forward pressure.

From StandingTo Top / Side Control
Overview

The lateral drop turns your hips and drops sideways while pulling the opponent over your leg/hip line so they fall to their back or side. It thrives in over-under and collar-and-sleeve clinches when they push into you — their forward pressure becomes the throw.

#Win the Clinch

You need connection and a forward load.

  • Establish over-under or collar-sleeve
  • Invite or feel their forward drive
  • Step into a strong turning stance
  • Choose the blocking leg/hip line
#Turn and Drop
  • Turn your hips laterally
  • Drop your level as hands pull them over
  • Block their near leg/hip path
  • Commit through the fall
#Settle Top

The throw ends in a pin.

  • Follow to side control or scarf hold
  • Clear frames and turtle turns
  • Establish cross-face/underhook
  • Only then hunt submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
  • Over-under clinch or collar-and-sleeve control
  • Hip and chest connection that feels their forward drive
  • Blocking leg/hip that they trip over as you drop
  • Hands pulling them laterally through the fall
Timing & Movement Cues
  • Drop when they drive forward into your clinch
  • Turn as their weight settles onto the near foot
  • Finish when their posture is already broken over your hip
Pressure & Weight Distribution
  • Use their push — do not muscle a static opponent sideways
  • Drop your level with the turn; standing tall telegraphs the throw
  • Follow to a pin so they cannot scramble to turtle
Typical Counters to Expect
  • Pulling back out of the clinch before you turn
  • Circling the free foot around your blocking leg
  • Sprawling and whizzering as you commit the drop
Follow-Up Options
  • Side control or kesa / scarf-hold pins
  • Knee-on-belly if they land open
  • Pass chains if they pull guard mid-fall
Setups & Entries
  • Over-under pummel that invites a forward shove
  • Osoto or uchi mata feints that make them push back in
  • Arm-drag entries that put you on the flank
Training Drills
  • Clinch lateral-drop entries to controlled mats
  • Gi collar-sleeve lateral drops
  • No-gi over-under timing rounds
Coaching Notes
  • Their pressure is the fuel
  • Turn and drop together — late drops hit a strong base
  • Land in top control before celebrating the throw
