Smash Pass

Pressure pass that folds the opponent’s frames and chest flat — crushing half guard or open-guard retention into side control.

From Headquarters / Top Half GuardTo Side Control
Overview

The smash pass uses shoulder and hip pressure to flatten knee shields, butterflies, and half-guard frames until their hips stop moving. From headquarters or half guard top, you pin the upper body, fold the shield, and walk your hips through to side control without giving elevation space.

#Pin Upper Body

Smash starts above the hips.

  • Establish HQ or top half control
  • Clear collarbone and elbow frames
  • Set cross-face or shoulder pressure
  • Keep their near hip from elevating
#Fold the Shield
  • Angle your chest to collapse the knee shield
  • Staple the trapped thigh with hip pressure
  • Walk hips toward their head line as frames die
  • Prevent the underhook race with tight connection
#Clear to Side Control

Finish the pass, then stabilize.

  • Free the remaining hook or clamp
  • Settle chest-to-chest side control
  • Establish cross-face and underhook
  • Only then hunt submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
  • Cross-face or shoulder pressure that turns their face away
  • Underhook or tight body connection on the far side
  • Knee/hip staple that keeps their shield from reloading
  • Hands clearing elbow frames before the smash settles
Timing & Movement Cues
  • Smash when their knee shield angles off the chest
  • Drive as they turtle or turn away from cross-face pressure
  • Finish when both shoulders start flattening to the mat
Pressure & Weight Distribution
  • Chest-to-chest or shoulder-to-jaw pressure before hip travel
  • Keep hips heavy and low — standing tall invites underhooks
  • Walk the free knee through only after frames die
Typical Counters to Expect
  • Active Z-guard shield that never folds
  • Underhook dogfight when you overcommit the shoulder
  • Deep-half dives under heavy hips
Follow-Up Options
  • Side control with cross-face and underhook
  • Mount if they overframe the far shoulder
  • Knee-on-belly when they shrimp hard away
Setups & Entries
  • Headquarters pin that forces a shallow shield
  • Failed knee-cut that leaves them folded under your chest
  • Over-under pressure that collapses into smash geometry
Training Drills
  • HQ to smash-pass pressure rounds with progressive resistance
  • Shield-fold drills against cooperative knee shield
  • Smash to side-control consolidation without chasing submissions
Coaching Notes
  • Kill frames before celebrating the free leg
  • Pressure is direction, not just weight
  • If they underhook, address the underhook before smashing harder

Summary

Smash pass folds frames with shoulder and hip pressure from HQ or top half. Kill the shield, stay low, and walk through to side control — abandon the smash if they win a clean underhook.
