Balloon Sweep
Closed-guard sweep that elevates the opponent with feet on the hips and rolls them overhead — a classic balloon/overhead reversal.
From Closed GuardTo Mount / Top
Overview
The balloon sweep elevates a kneeling or postured opponent by placing feet on the hips (or belt line), extending, and rolling them overhead so you come up in mount or north-south. It rewards timing when they drive forward and pairs with flower and pendulum threats from the same closed-guard grips.
#Plant and Load
Get feet on the hips with grips.
- Establish collar-sleeve or head-and-arm control from closed guard
- Open and place both feet on the hips
- Pull them into a forward lean
- Feel their base lighten
#Elevate and Roll
- Extend both legs to balloon them up
- Steer with grips toward the overhead path
- Roll your shoulders as they pass over
- Keep connection so they cannot post out
#Come Up Mount
Finish on top.
- Follow through to mount or a stable top pin
- Clear immediate frames and bridges
- Establish posture and hip pressure
- Only then hunt submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
- Collar and sleeve (gi) or head-and-arm control (no-gi)
- Both feet on the hips ready to elevate
- Hands that steer the overhead direction
- Head position tucked as you roll
Timing & Movement Cues
- Elevate when they drive forward into your guard
- Roll as their base leaves the mat
- Come up the moment their shoulders pass your head line
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Extend the legs fully — half lifts stall
- Pull with the grips while you elevate
- Follow the roll; do not stay flat after they pass overhead
Typical Counters to Expect
- Posturing and sitting back before the lift
- Posting a hand that blocks the overhead path
- Standing and clearing feet from the hips
Follow-Up Options
- Mount after a clean overhead
- Side control if they land off-angle
- Flower or pendulum if the balloon is defended early
Setups & Entries
- Collar-sleeve closed guard that invites a forward drive
- Fake flower sweep to load them forward
- Open the guard briefly to plant both feet on the hips
Training Drills
- Balloon elevation reps with cooperative partners
- Balloon to mount consolidations
- Closed-guard chains: balloon / flower / pendulum
Coaching Notes
- Timing beats strength — wait for forward pressure
- Feet on hips, not on the thighs alone
- Protect your neck as you roll and come up immediately

Balloon sweeps elevate a forward-driving opponent from closed guard and roll them overhead into mount. Plant both feet on the hips, extend on timing, and come up ready to pin.
