Flower Sweep
Classic closed-guard sweep that loads one arm and leg on the same side, then pendulums the free leg to reverse to mount.

Overview
The flower sweep (often taught next to pendulum mechanics) off-balances a postured opponent in closed guard by controlling same-side arm and leg, then swinging your free leg to reverse them to mount. It remains a foundational gi sweep and adapts to no-gi with wrist and underhook controls.
#Load the Sweep Side
Control same-side arm and leg before the pendulum.
- Break posture inside closed guard
- Grip same-side sleeve/wrist and pant/ankle
- Angle your hips so their weight sits on the trapped side
- Keep the guard closed enough that they cannot stand freely
#Pendulum and Reverse
- Open guard and swing the free leg across their base
- Pull the controlled arm while elevating the trapped leg
- Follow their shoulders over the tipping point
- Keep grips until you start climbing to mount
#Consolidate Mount
Arrive in a pin, not a scramble.
- Land in mount with knees pinched
- Establish posture control before attacking
- Address immediate elbow escapes
- Only then hunt submissions
Key Grips & Control Points
- Same-side sleeve or wrist control
- Same-side pant, ankle, or underhook on the leg you will elevate
- Closed-guard hip angle that loads their weight onto the trapped side
- Free-leg pendulum ready to swing across their base
Timing & Movement Cues
- Sweep when they posture and post the same-side hand or knee
- Initiate as their weight shifts onto the trapped side
- Follow to mount immediately when their shoulders pass the tipping point
Pressure & Weight Distribution
- Pull the controlled arm across as you elevate the trapped leg
- Swing the free leg with commitment — hesitant pendulums stall mid-sweep
- Climb to mount before they recover a knee shield
Typical Counters to Expect
- Posturing and basing the free hand far from the sweep line
- Standing out of closed guard before the load finishes
- Extracting the trapped knee and settling into a pass
Follow-Up Options
- Mount control and cross-collar or arm attacks
- Armbar if they post the free arm during the sweep
- Technical mount / back take if they turn away while reversing
Setups & Entries
- Break posture in closed guard, then isolate same-side sleeve and pant
- Fake a hip-bump or scissor to make them post the target hand
- Use collar-and-sleeve control in the gi to load the sweep side
Training Drills
- Closed-guard posture break to flower-sweep entries
- Pendulum timing reps with a cooperative partner
- Sweep-to-mount consolidation without releasing grips early
Coaching Notes
- Load arm and leg on one side before you swing
- The free-leg pendulum is the engine — hips and grips are the steering
- Finish in mount; stopping in scramble position gifts the pass back

Summary
Flower sweeps are same-side load plus pendulum. Control the arm and leg, tip their base with the free leg, and climb to mount before they recover frames.
